Counter-Pattern Engineer
Inverts the machinery of compulsion — building the patterns that undo what extractive design has done.
Role Summary
The Counter-Pattern Engineer designs, builds, and validates the directorate's primary weapons: counter-patterns, the precise behavioral inversions of cataloged dark patterns. Working from the Technique Index and the Bias & Model Vault, the role translates each documented exploitation mechanism into a tested remediation that can be deployed through THE UNDERTOW or surfaced through Unranked's public tools. The Counter-Pattern Lab pipeline is the forge; this engineer runs it, from hypothesis through A/B validation to field-ready artifact. Every counter-pattern that ships clean is a compulsion loop broken at the root.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and prototype counter-patterns in the Counter-Pattern Lab, deriving each from a cataloged technique in the Technique Index with full provenance.
- Build and execute validation protocols — A/B testing, cognitive-load measurement, and relapse-rate tracking — before any counter-pattern is promoted to the Compendium.
- Integrate counter-pattern delivery hooks into THE UNDERTOW's injection layer in coordination with the Relay Engineering team.
- Maintain the Counter-Pattern Compendium as a versioned, auditable registry of all field-ready inversions and their linked techniques.
- Collaborate with Behavioral Modeling Specialists to ensure each counter-pattern targets the correct cognitive bias without introducing secondary manipulation.
- Conduct post-deployment efficacy reviews using GOVERNOR telemetry and flag any counter-pattern exhibiting unintended compulsive properties for immediate withdrawal.
Required Qualifications
- Software engineering background with experience in UX, behavioral design, or interaction architecture.
- Demonstrated understanding of dark-pattern taxonomies and persuasive-design mechanisms.
- Proficiency in experimental design and A/B testing methodologies at scale.
- Ethical reasoning discipline sufficient to distinguish remediation from counter-manipulation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior work in consumer-protection technology, ad-tech auditing, or deceptive-design research.
- Familiarity with cognitive-bias literature and behavioral-economics frameworks.
- Experience with injection or instrumentation pipelines in production mobile or web environments.
