Platform Reverse-Engineer
Strips the varnish off platform code — exposing the dark-pattern delivery mechanisms the developers buried in the build.
Role Summary
The Platform Reverse-Engineer tears apart target platform client applications, SDK internals, ad-tech pipelines, and recommendation-engine interfaces to expose the precise technical mechanisms through which dark patterns reach users. Where the Technique Researcher names what a manipulation does to behavior, this role names what the code does to deliver it — mapping obfuscated event loops, hidden engagement triggers, algorithmic amplification hooks, and coerced-consent flows at the binary and protocol level. The output is a technical anatomy of each target platform's dark-pattern delivery stack, fed directly to the Technique Index, the Counter-Pattern Lab, and the Undertow Relay team so they know exactly where to aim. A dark pattern the directorate cannot trace to its delivery mechanism is a dark pattern it cannot reliably counter.
Key Responsibilities
- Reverse-engineer target platform client applications — mobile, desktop, and web — decompiling, instrumenting, and tracing the code paths that deliver dark-pattern experiences to end users.
- Analyze ad-tech SDKs, recommendation-engine APIs, and engagement-optimization pipelines to map the technical delivery chain from platform intent to user-facing manipulation.
- Produce detailed technical anatomies of each target platform's dark-pattern delivery stack, documenting obfuscation layers, trigger conditions, A/B gating logic, and payload structures.
- Collaborate with Technique Researchers to link each discovered delivery mechanism to its corresponding cataloged dark pattern in the Technique Index, enriching entries with implementation-level detail.
- Feed reverse-engineering findings to the Undertow Relay Engineers and Counter-Pattern Engineers so injection points and counter-pattern targeting can be calibrated against actual platform internals.
- Monitor platform update cycles, SDK version changes, and client-side refactors to detect when a target shifts its dark-pattern delivery mechanism and alert the directorate before counter-patterns break.
Required Qualifications
- Software reverse-engineering background with demonstrated experience in binary analysis, decompilation, or protocol dissection of commercial applications.
- Deep fluency in mobile and web platform architectures — Android, iOS, and browser runtimes — including runtime hooking, instrumentation, and traffic interception.
- Working knowledge of ad-tech ecosystems, real-time bidding pipelines, and engagement-optimization infrastructure at the code level.
- Operational-security discipline appropriate to covert analysis of proprietary systems under legal and detection risk.
Preferred Qualifications
- Security research, bug-bounty, or red-team experience targeting consumer platform applications.
- Familiarity with machine-learning model extraction, feature-flag reverse-engineering, or algorithmic audit methodologies.
- Prior work in consumer-protection technology, regulatory forensics, or platform-accountability research.
