Mesh Probe Node Deployment & Calibration
ActiveEngineeringRev B
Purpose
To govern the field deployment, calibration, and commissioning of Instrumentation Mesh environmental sensor nodes that monitor attention, microclimate, and surface telemetry across the surface grid. The procedure ensures data integrity and reliable connectivity from each node into the Pattern Fabric.
Scope
All Instrumentation Mesh node siting, calibration, and commissioning in the field.
In scope:
- Node siting and physical mounting
- Sensor calibration against reference standards
- Network join and telemetry verification
- As-built documentation of node placement
Out of scope:
- Data fabric backend failover, which follows Pattern Fabric Failover
- Drone-mounted sensing, which follows Undertow Fleet Pre-Deployment & Tasking
Definitions
Instrumentation Mesh
The distributed mesh of field sensor nodes reporting environmental and surface telemetry.
Reference Calibration
Adjustment of a node's sensors against a traceable laboratory standard before commissioning.
Join
The authenticated process by which a node is admitted to the mesh and begins reporting.
Responsibilities
Sensor Network Engineer (Owner)
Owns the procedure and signs off node commissioning into production telemetry.
Field Technician
Mounts, calibrates, and joins nodes and records as-built placement.
Data Fabric Operator
Confirms node telemetry is ingested cleanly and flags malformed streams.
Procedure
Siting & Mounting
- Confirm the planned coordinate, clearance, and solar exposure on arrival.
- Mount the node securely and orient sensors per the deployment plan.
- Verify power and antenna seating before energising.
Calibration
- Run the reference calibration routine against the carried standard.
- Record offsets and confirm readings within tolerance.
- Reject and replace any sensor failing calibration twice.
Commissioning
- Authenticate and join the node to the Instrumentation Mesh.
- Confirm telemetry arrives in the data fabric with correct node identity.
- Record as-built coordinates and mark the node active in the register.
PPE & Controls

Records Generated
- Node commissioning and calibration log
- As-built placement register
- Telemetry verification record
