Instrumentation Mesh - The Monitoring Nervous System
The Instrumentation Mesh is how THE RESET hears the attention world. Tens of thousands of probe nodes stream time-on-platform, engagement temperature, recommender behaviour, pattern load, and dark-pattern telemetry across the Pattern Fabric to GOVERNOR, which turns raw signal into briefings, alarms, and trends. This page documents the three systems, the probe array, alarm escalation, and current mesh health.
The Three Systems
The monitoring nervous system is three interlocking layers — sensing, fabric, and analytics — each able to degrade gracefully without taking the others down.
Instrumentation Mesh
The distributed surface and attention sensing mesh. Probe nodes measure time-on-platform, engagement temperature, recommender behaviour, dark-pattern load, and disclosure coverage, streaming continuous signal from every instrumented surface and open channel.
Pattern Fabric
The self-healing mesh backbone that carries all probe traffic and GOVERNOR queries over the Relay Protocol. Nodes route around faults like a packet mesh around a dead link — no single point of failure, no central choke point.
GOVERNOR
The analytics and AI layer. GOVERNOR fuses every stream into attention-health scores, anomaly detection, and plain-language briefings, and raises the alarms below. Open the GOVERNOR Console →
Probe Array
Seven probe classes make up the standard Instrumentation Mesh field package. Each feeds a named metric tracked in the Metrics catalogue.
| Probe | Measures | Where | Sample rate | Linked metric |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Session probe | Per-user session length & intraday delta (dwell, autoplay drift, deliberate logoff). | Every instrumented surface session. | 1 / min | Daily Time-on-Platform |
| Engagement-temp probe | Compulsion-signal intensity & variable-reward firing stability. | Surface interaction layer. | 4 / min | Engagement Temperature |
| Recommender monitor | Recommender behaviour — ranking signals, rabbit-hole drift, outrage amplification. | Surface feed & ranking path. | Continuous | Recommender Integrity |
| Pattern sniffer | Active dark-pattern density & sub-threshold manipulation load. | Surface UI & flow layer. | 2 / min | Dark-Pattern Load |
| Diversity counter | Source & viewpoint diversity reaching the user; echo-chamber narrowing. | Feed delivery gate. | Per feed refresh | Information Diversity |
| Dark-pattern spectrometer | Confirmed dark-pattern signatures in flows, consent walls, and checkout paths. | Flow-capture cell. | 6 / hr | Dark-Pattern Detection Rate |
| Relay node | Mesh link health, hop latency, and node power for the surrounding cell. | Edge relay masts & Tracker nodes. | 10 / min | Pattern Fabric Latency |
Alarm Escalation Matrix
GOVERNOR scores every stream against thresholds and raises one of four severities. Escalation routes to people and, above warn, to the response & drill ladder.
| Severity | Example trigger | Notified | Response time |
|---|---|---|---|
| OK | All metrics within band; mesh coverage nominal. | Logged only — visible on the Live Command Wall. | — |
| INFO | Single node offline; brief diversity dip; minor session drift. | Instrumentation Mesh engineering queue (GOVERNOR digest). | Next shift |
| WARN | Engagement temp out of band; rabbit-hole signature; sustained dwell spike; cell coverage gap. | On-call surface analyst + duty officer. | ≤ 30 min |
| CRIT | Dark-pattern spike on the spectrometer; multi-node fabric partition; mass-manipulation surge signal. | Duty officer, Engineering director, and the drill ladder. | Immediate |
